Homemade "Tiger Balm"

According to Wikipedia the medicinal ingredients in Tiger Balm are: Menthol 10%, Camphor 11%, Mint oil 6%, Cajuput oil 7%, Clove bud oil 5%, Cassia oil 5% The remainder is a petroleum jelly and paraffin base, which are horrible things to be putting on your skin! Here is an all-natural alternative...

To save you the math and counting out drops, I have worked out an easy to follow recipe for a 2oz (fluid ounce) jar.
1 oz      Olive oil
1 g        Beeswax (very small nugget)
1.5 tsp  Menthol crystals
1.5 tsp  Camphor EO
1 tsp     Mint EO
1 tsp     Cajuput EO
1/2 tsp  Clove Bud EO
1/2 tsp  Cassia EO

***This recipe can also make a homemade "Vapo-Rub" by substituting the Clove Bud EO, and Cassia EO with 1/2 tsp of Eucalyptus EO.

Melt beeswax in a double boiler, then add olive oil. When liquid and combined, take double boiler off the heat and add the Menthol Crystals, the rest of the Essential Oils, and stir well. Pour mixture immediately into a clean & sterile jar/container, and allow to cool/solidify before replacing the cap on the container. This is powerful stuff, so if you find yourself wanting a milder blend, just re-melt under low heat and add a bit more olive oil & beeswax. The recipe can be tweaked without fear the end result will be disastrous.

All that being said, this is not the exact recipe I followed...
I used wild mint infused olive oil (that I prepared myself) instead of the Mint EO, and I did not have Cassia EO, so I just left it out. The most important ingredients for the medicinal effectiveness for this is the Menthol Crystals, Camphor EO, and Cajuput EO, (*or Eucalyptus).

Now all I need are original names for my "Tiger Balm", and "Vapo-Rub" that are not copyright infringements! :o)  I welcome ALL suggestions!
FYI - How does "Tiger Balm" work?
"When Tiger Balm is applied to the skin, the rubefacient and analgesic properties provide symptomatic relief from the pain and discomfort associated with the muscular aches and pains of muscle and joints, arthritis, rheumatism and backaches. The active ingredients in camphor and the essential oils in Tiger Balm dilate the peripheral blood vessels and bring blood closer to the skin’s surface.  This produces increased circulation and warmth. The increase in blood flow speeds up the healing process.  This also increases the temperature of the skin and the sensation of warmth serves as a distraction from the pain. The local analgesic effect reduces the sensation of pain." source

  2. Wow, this is A LOT of essential oil to use for just one ounce of carrier oil. Are you sure this is safe on the skin? Essential oils are extremely strong concentrates and I've always read that they should never be more than 2% of a recipe? Love the idea of making it yourself though! No petroleum products should ever go on our skin. = )

    1. Yes, it is A LOT! :o)
It really depends on what your recipe is for, and what essential oils you are using. These are therapeutic amounts, enough to produce the desired cold/hot sensation.

I use this on myself (very sensitive skin)as well as my family and there is no irritation issues. I'm actually using this, combined with my herb & spice cough syrup for my 2 yr old right now. She has chest congestion and a raspy cough. A few mins. after I apply the combo, she is clear and her cough is gone!

  4. What oil combinations should I use to make a tiger balm with a cooling sensation? I've found lots of recipes for hot tiger balm, but I've heard that the cooling balm is better for headaches.

  5. Katie- you could cut the clove oil out and replace it with coconut oil, clove is what gives tiger balm it's heat.

  6. I know I'm late to the game, but I'm new around here so I have a question. What ingredient gives it the burn? I tried to make tiger balm with another recipe and it does not burn. I need the burn. Also, how many drops would you say a tsp is? Thanks
