Walking a Labyrinth
A labyrinth and a maze are different. There are no
dead ends, or wrong turns in a labyrinth; it contains only one path and
the entrance and exit are one. Although they are used extensively by
many cultures throughout history, a modern day walking labyrinth is
often used for meditation and self-reflection.
When
walking a labyrinth one makes several 180 degree turns. This shifts
your awareness from right brain to left brain, inducing receptive states
of consciousness.
Each walk
through a labyrinth is a different experience. It is not only a
meditation tool, it can be used to ponder questions. Present your
problem as you enter, ponder as you walk, look at different sides of the
issue as you turn, and exit the labyrinth when you reach a conclusion.
Use the labyrinth for reflection, centering yourself, reducing stress, and finding your inner peace. They can also be used for the simple enjoyment of a whimsical walk going nowhere.
I just love this last idea for backyard labyrinth instead of the traditional 'boring' lawn!
