Spruce Grouse: Watchful Momma

As we were hiking yesterday, I heard a soft 'coo' and noticed this stunning female Spruce Grouse out in the open, right on the path!

Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis) prefer to remain silent and hidden on the forest floor, so I was surprised to see one out like this - but then we saw why....

There were chicks slowly toddling along behind her! I was able to count 6 in total, but just like
all children, they refuse to sit still, so I was unable to get a shot of them all together.

Momma watched us carefully, but sensed we were no threat. She stood in the path and coo'd until the last little straggler caught up and they calmly made their way back into the woods...

Our little family smiled in wonder at her little family, and then we continued on our way.
Just up the path there was another little surprise for us - a nest of newly hatched grouse eggs! Was it her nest? We guessed yes.
