Calgary food activist has lost the backyard hen battle, for now...
"Paul Hughes vowed to continue fighting to have hens in his backyard for food and pets, despite losing his Charter challenge against the City of Calgary in court on Wednesday.
“I am a bit of a chicken in (the) headlights . . . I’m a little bit shocked,” Hughes said after provincial court Judge Catherine Skene dismissed his challenge and convicted him of violating the city’s responsible pet ownership bylaw." Read the entire article here.
Since this is in my city, and I own backyard hens - this affects me
directly. However, this judgement affects everyone who feels
disconnected with their food, wants to change it, and feels government
should not be allowed to control your personal production of food (as
long as it doesn't interfere with the rights and freedoms of others).
I am glad he is not giving up, and will be appealing the decision!
Good work Paul 'FoodJustice' Hughes!
